About

Hi, I'm Alex Carpenter

There are times you need to talk about the difficult topics—the kind of issues or struggles you may not feel comfortable discussing with friends or family. You need an experienced professional who will not only listen with an open mind but be guided by your personal values and the vision you have for your best life. One who will ensure a safe yet challenging environment. I have worked with college-age adults facing addiction and other mental health issues, individuals and family members of all ages encountering serious illness, death, and grief, as well as mature adults dealing with aging issues and caregivers of loved ones with dementia, depression, and anxiety. In my current work as a full-time therapist at Alabama Clinical Schools—a residential facility for adolescent sexual abuse victims and perpetrators—I lead individual and group therapy sessions with adolescents that explore trauma, behavioral issues, anxiety, depression, and the process of reintegration. I received an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and a graduate Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, after which I served a year-long clinical residency at UAB Hospital’s Palliative and Geriatric Care Unit. While my education means I’ll always consider the deeper philosophical questions of life, my training allows me to employ a practical cognitive behavioral therapy model and a real-world, individual-centered approach as we work together to achieve a life well-lived—one created for and by you.
